Peter de Jánosi

Dr. Peter De Jánosi was a critical force in the development of and support for the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) from its founding in 1972 through the end of his six-year term as IIASA Director in 1996. As Director, he guided IIASA’s transition from its role as a bridge between East and West during the Cold War to an international research organization addressing the global problems confronting nations, both North and South.

The Peter De Jánosi Visiting Fellowship and YSSP Travel Grant Programs support his vision of vital American participation in IIASA’s global research program.

The Peter De Jánosi Visiting Fellowship Program is awarded to enable outstanding researchers and practitioners from U.S. Institutions to make extended visits to IIASA to collaborate with IIASA researchers. Summer visits will include opportunities to support the Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). Recipients will be “De Jánosi Visiting Fellows”.  More information about the Fellowship, including processes for nominating or applying for the award and information about previous awardees.

The Peter De Jánosi Travel Grant Program is offered to faculty advisers of students from U.S. Institutions who are selected for the IIASA YSSP. Advisors may apply for a Travel Grant to support their travel and living expenses for a visit of up to 2 weeks at IIASA during their student’s participation in the program. Details, including application processes, are available here.

Funding

The Peter De Jánosi Visiting Fellowships and Travel Grants will be funded from the proceeds of a development campaign by IIASA and Friends of IIASA in 2011-2013, which raised one million dollars to memorialize the contributions of Peter De Jánosi to IIASA.  Friends of IIASA is grateful to the community of supporters of Dr. De Jánosi for making these programs possible. It is to the advantage of the community to make the Peter De Jánosi Fund grow, and continuing donations are encouraged.

An individual may be appointed as a De Jánosi Visiting Fellow more than once; however, successive appointments will be separated by at least two years.

The recipients may be in any area of research that is of interest to members of the IIASA Research Staff. However, in recognition of the interests of Peter De Jánosi in the application of research results to critical societal challenges, preference will be shown to candidates whose work is directly relevant to public and private sector decision makers and managers.
